SAG Awards 2014 Red Carpet

SAG AWARDS 2014

This time around for my fashion review of the SAG Awards, we will be doing a "versus" type of breakdown.  The contestants are grouped for various reasons and some will make sense, and some will be just make sense in my random thoughts.  Fashion is just meant to be fun, and that's what the intent of this blog is all about so let the matches begin!

Jennifer Lawrence vs. Sofia Vergara in the battle of Metallics
I am going to have to give the edge on this one to Sofia even though on the red carpet t looked very stiff and breastplate like.  In photos however she looks incredible and the hair and makeup are flawless. J-Law's dress looks tacky and cheap.

Amy Adams vs. Cate Blanchett in the battle of Best Actress Fashionistas
Both of these leading ladies always take risks and definitely change it up so I give them credit for that. But there can only be one winner in my races and she is Amy in this category. The blue looks great on her skin, the dress is interesting and the hair is nicely styled.  Cate drops the ball here, I don't get the design element here.

Julia Roberts vs. Sandra Bullock in the battle of 90's Box Office Queens
Julia definitely looks better than she did for the Globes but I'm not feeling the jumpsuit.  Sandra Bullock kills it in this gift wrap inspired number that I actually really like. Kudos!

Lupita N'yongo vs. Michelle Dockery in the battle of Best Dressed
For these ladies it's not just a privilege to be nominated in this category since overall they are my two best dressed of the night and in that case are both winners. But there can only be one ultimately best dressed and I give the edge to Lupita.  The bright color is exciting, along with the flower detail that just really sets this dress apart. Both of these beauties really stood out with their perfect skin and spectacular choices.

Matthew McConaughey vs. Matt Damon in the battle of the "Matt's"
This is pretty much not even a fair contest with one of these couples being former models, but life isn't fair and both of these couples have money and access to the same resources so with that said, my winners are Matthew and Camilla.  Camilla comes close to losing with the tone of the yellow but is helped by Matthew's gorgeous pinstripe and choice and I give him kudos for really making menswear exciting on the red carpet.

Edie Falco vs. Mariah Carey in the battle of the Butterfly Lovers
I love butterflies as much as anyone, but yikes in this category.  Now some of you may know of my loyal love for Mariah and let this serve to show that I do not hold favorites on the red carpet because as awful as both of these are, there needs to be on who wins and in this case it is Edie. I don't like Edie's dress by any means but Mariah gives her the win with her hair and makeup. And Mariah, the gloves needed to be off for you to even stand a chance and hopefully added to give your too short dress for some extra hemline.

Anna Gunn vs. Kerry Washington in the battle of the TV Ratings Queens
Kerry has taken down many on the red carpet with her stylist and her choices but tonight she falls flat with this one.  I blame it on the hormones?  Anna looks stunning and what a way to shine for your final season of a beloved series.  The outline, the overlay of the beading, this dress is gorge!

Elisabeth Moss vs. Jennifer Garner in the battle of the Strapless Gowns with belts
What a difference a week makes for Elisabeth, I am loving the soft hair, and this color on her skin. Jennifer looks regal in her choice for the night, and I give her the win on this one.  The dress looks a bit stiff in the photo but if you saw the telecast, it moved so perfectly on the stage.

Emma Thompson vs. Meryl Streep in the battle of the Interesting Choices
I am well aware that these two don't give much of a care to the red carpet portion of these shows to perhaps give more attention to the performances they grace us with.  They are immensely talented as we all know and I respect that they beat to their own drum.  Out of these two I think Meryl wins out just for the fact that she really went for a dress she likes, not trying to pick out something semi-formal and then falling flatter with the proportions as Emma did.

Amanda Peet vs. Juliette Lewis in the battle of the Duvet Covers
It could be because of the fact that I was out hunting for a new duvet cover all weekend and these prints were very similar to those textiles.   Both of these actresses have been enigmatic on screen and are always unpredictable on the carpet.  Juliette wins it here with her gown that makes me so uncomfortable for the fact that I don't know if I hate it, or if I love it.  I find beautiful elements to it, the draping the color; and then equally hideous things about it, the pattern, the hair choice, but it lingers with me.

Julie Bowen (Claire Dunphy) vs. Claire Danes in the battle of the Claires
Ms. Danes is usually a knockout on the red carpet and I like the deeper hair color here, but the dress is a mess to me.  I think it has a bit too much going on design wise.  Ms. Bowen's dress wins here for its risky fabric, the geometric print, and that it is left of center.  I like that it is different and this awards show lends itself to be a bit more eccentric.

Aaron Paul vs. James Marsden in the battle of the Two-Toned Suits
James nails it with the tailoring, the tone, the pop of color with the pocket square, a total win.  Aaron makes no sense with the shoes, the ill fitting pants and still just looks too much like his 'Breaking Bad' character in a getup.

Isla Fisher vs. Tina Fey in the battle of Trains
Isla Fisher nails the hair, so vavoom and I love the cut of the top portion of this dress.  It loses some of the form towarss the train and becomes weighted down.  Tina's dress is much more pulled together, I love the rounded neck, the peekaboo detail, and it gives her great curves..then there's the hair.  Why? It's so Wicked Witch of the East and with the black just looks like she is auditioning for the part of Helen Keller's teacher.

Holly Hunter vs. Patricia Arquette in the Battle of Reds
Holly sweeps the floor in this stunning silhouette.  She looks fit, sexy and spunky especially net to Patricia's dowdy, heavy frock.  Patricia just doesn't have the radiance, nor looks like she even wanted to be there.

Betsy Brandt vs. Helen Mirren vs. Mayim Bialik vs. Kaley Cuoco in the Battle of Worst Dressed
Sadly there are no winners in this category.  Betsy and Helen appear to be wearing Julianna Margulies' leftover fabric from her gown at the Globes (see here).  Mayim and Kaley drown in heavy drapes that really have no rhyme or reason. Very Scarlett O'Hara but not in a good way.

Jane Krakowski vs Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the Battle of the Off the Shoulder Slinky
I didn't want to end this on a sour note so I wrap it up with these two.  I don't totally love either look but each do have parts that I like.  Jane's hair is perfection and with her dress' interesting top detail, I say she just narrowly beats Julia even though I am not a fan of the color or the bunchy gathering at the midsection.  I like Julia's length, and I almost wish the colors were opposite of what they are or that the bust area were designed a bit more flattering.

Thank you again for reading and see you at the Grammy's!
